Nurses are the backbone of the hospice care team at Homage Hospice and play an important role in ensuring all our patients are comfortable and well-cared for while living out their days with dignity and meaning.
Nurses are crucial members of hospice care teams because they often have to manage multiple roles, including pain management, family support, and psychosocial support.
What is a Hospice Nurse?
Unlike hospital nurses, hospice nurses focus on comfort and quality of life rather than administering curative treatments. They also provide individualized care tailored to each patient’s unique needs. Hospice nurses work alongside the hospice care team to meet the patient’s physical, social, and emotional needs.
The Services Hospice Nurses Provide at Homage Hospice
Hospice nurses can carry out a variety of roles as our patient’s needs evolve.
- Assessment and Care Planning. The first step of hospice is creating a personalized care plan, and nurses are involved in this process to help assess the patient’s needs. Our nurses work closely with the patient, their family, and our other team members, such as physicians, hospice aids, and spiritual counselors, to meet the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
- Pain Management. Hospice is focused on ensuring patients’ comfort at all times. This means working closely with hospice physicians to create a care plan that addresses chronic and acute pain. This will include pain medication (not curative) and physical therapy.
- Symptom Management. Patients in hospice care will experience a range of physical symptoms, from pain, nausea, fevers, bladder and bowel issues, and abnormal heartbeats. Symptom management also includes mental symptoms like anxiety and depression, where nurses will work alongside spiritual counselors and social workers to address these symptoms. Our nurses spend a lot of time with their patients, and for many, they can be a source of comfort when family is not available.
- Patient Advocacy. A nurse’s number one priority is the comfort and well-being of their patients. At Homage Hospice, our nurses can advocate for their patients to ensure their wishes and needs are met.
- Family Support. Hospice nurses also support the patient’s family by providing education and connecting them to resources that will help them during their loved one’s end-stage-of-life journey. They can work alongside bereavement specialists to help families navigate the grieving process.
