Volunteers are compassionate, selfless individuals who are part of the hospice care team and play an important role in providing non-medical support to hospice patients and their families.
The Role of Volunteers in Homage Hospice
Hospice care volunteers play a number of different roles to provide comfort to our patients and families.
- Companionship. Hospice care is not just about managing the physical pain and symptoms but also addressing emotional and social needs as well. Hospice volunteers are a source of companionship, whether it’s through just lending an open ear, reading to them, listening to music, watching TV, or even just sitting quietly with the patient. This is exceptionally important for patients who don’t get visitors that often or who don’t have family.
- Practical services. Volunteers can provide comfort and assistance not only to patients but also to caregivers. For example, volunteers can lighten the caregiver’s load by running errands like fetching bedding or getting groceries. Light chores like helping the patient with grooming, changing bedding, light housekeeping, or preparing meals. When caregivers need a short break or to complete an errand, volunteers can help by watching over the patient for a short period.
- Photography services. Volunteers can carry out a unique role by taking photos of patients and their families. This can be a great source of comfort for families that are unable to visit their loved ones as often as they’d like.
- Enrichment. Fun and enjoyment play an important role in hospice care, and that’s why volunteers can assist with hosting a range of arts, crafts, and musical instruments. This is a great way to promote socialization and mental stimulation.
- Administrative support. Some hospice volunteers spend some time in the office, providing administrative support such as filing documents, answering phones, and organizing departments. This helps staff run operations smoothly.
