The medical team plays a crucial role in Homage Hospice to ensure the patient’s pain and symptoms are managed to ensure they live out their lives with dignity and respect.
What Does a Hospice Physician Do?
The hospice physician team is responsible for creating a customized care plan for patients by reviewing their medical history, diagnosing and evaluating changes in their condition, managing pain, and writing hospice care orders. Physicians work alongside other members of the hospice care team, such as the nursing staff and hospice aids, to create a comprehensive care plan.
Physicians also have a role in helping patients and families decide if it’s time for hospice and answer all their questions and concerns about hospice. They will also take the time to explain how hospice will work for the patient and their family. Generally, hospice physicians are trained and experienced in care specific to hospice.
While hospice physicians don’t carry our curative treatments, they will provide the following services:
- Pain management: provides comfort from chronic and acute pain
- Skincare: Ensures the medical team checks for bed sores, skin breakouts, and wound care
- Breathing relief: Will help alleviate breathing problems with the use of oxygen regulators and tanks
- Gastric care: Relief for conditions like nausea, vomiting, and constitution
- Continuous care: Treatment for crises like changes in consciousness, seizures, and bouts of agitation and restlessness
Is There a Difference Between a Hospice Physician and a General Physician?
Yes, while both physicians have medical degrees, a general physician focuses on the patient’s overall health and treating conditions. Hospice physicians focus more on enhancing the comfort of their patients rather than curative treatments and can also create plans for palliative care.
