Hospice Care
If you or your loved one is just starting to navigate the world of hospice care, you’ll likely have some questions and concerns. To help make this transition for you and your family less daunting, we’ve compiled an all-you-need-to-know guide about hospice.
What is Hospice?
Hospice is a special compassionate care for patients with late-stage and terminal illnesses and their families. The care received during hospice focuses on the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
Hospice care includes but is not limited to:
- Pain control and management
- Assistance with daily activities
- Chaplain services
It’s important to understand that hospice care is not meant for curative purposes but to provide compassionate support to manage pain and allow patients to live out their remaining days with comfort, meaning, and dignity.
Is it Time For Hospice?
Knowing when to call hospice for you or a loved one can be difficult, but there are signs that it’s time for hospice:
- Frequent visits to the hospital or ER that indicate traditional treatments are no longer working.
- Changes in medical abilities like increased confusion or forgetfulness
- Progressive weight loss
- Increased pain that is becoming more difficult to control at home
- Increased shortness of breath
- Frequent or recurring infections
- A rapid decline in health over six months despite medical treatments
Hospice Eligibility
No one diagnosis qualifies patients for hospice, but rather a combination of symptoms and circumstances.
For a patient to be eligible for hospice, they need to have been diagnosed with a terminal illness and a diagnosis of six months. The patient should have also experienced significant weight loss, visited the hospital frequently, and had a Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) rating of 50-60%.
Paying for Hospice Care
One of the most common questions patients and their loved ones have about hospice care is, “Who pays for hospice care?”
The two top payers of hospice care are government-backed Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare provides 100% hospice care coverage under the Medicare Hospice Benefit for people aged 65 and up.
Medicaid provides hospice care coverage for seniors, low-income families, and patients with a disability.
Private insurance will include hospice care benefits according to your plan.
4 Levels of Care
The needs of a hospice care patient are constantly evolving, and so must their care. To do this, four levels of care were created:
Hospice care at home
Patients do not need around-the-clock care and have controlled symptoms
Continuous hospice care
Also called crisis care, this is a temporary level of care for patients suffering from acute symptoms like severe pain and difficulty breathing
General inpatient care
This includes 24/7 monitoring and complex medical equipment while a patient is in crisis
Respite
care
care
A temporary period of care to give the primary caregiver a break while continuing around-the-clock care.

I would like to commend Homage Hospice on such great work they do. From the owner Ryan then it starts to trickle down to the front office staff, Laura F (Chief Marketing Officer). Now Laura I think she holds more than one title I can call her anytime and ask her any and everything. She is Johnny on the spot. She gets on it. The nurse Irene is very kind, respectful and another one on top of things. The patients at Enhancing Life Care love when Irene comes to the home. I like to say thank you for everything you do. A couple of weeks after we moved to Texas my mother’s health declined unexpectedly and getting her connected to medical providers proved to be challenging. Two hours after calling, Homage was at our door. All medical equipment arrived same day and the next morning my mother’s medication was delivered. I honestly couldn’t believe how seamlessly the process was from beginning to end. Everyone we interacted with was very professional and empathetic.
